Welcome to the official page for “Shoulder Deep” – the compelling veterinary comedy-drama crafted by our second Film Accelerator cohort.

Drawing on real-life experiences and a deep sense of camaraderie, this film tells the story of a young English vet navigating the culture shock of rural Northeast Scotland.

About the Film

“Shoulder Deep” is an emotional yet humorous tale inspired by the life of Tom Arthur—a kind-hearted, larger-than-life individual whose promising veterinary career was tragically cut short. Moved by his compassion and courage, our cohort writers developed a narrative that blends heartfelt tribute with offbeat comedy.

The film follows Will, a newly qualified vet from England, as he faces the brisk, quirky challenges of rural life, encountering eccentric characters and unexpected mishaps along the way. With authentic locations, real animals, and genuine veterinary equipment, “Shoulder Deep” captures both the humor and heart of rural Scottish life.

The Film Accelerator Impact

“Shoulder Deep” represents the culmination of our second Film Accelerator cohort, where 38 participants gained hands-on, professional-level filmmaking experience. Over the 12-week program, participants developed practical skills in:

  • Pre-Production: Script development, storyboarding, production planning, budgeting, and scheduling
  • Production: Camera operation, lighting, sound recording, production design, costume design, and on-set protocols
  • Post-Production: Editing, color grading, sound design, and music composition

Each participant worked directly with industry professionals, gaining valuable mentorship while contributing to a festival-quality short film. The program’s real-world production environment created not just technical skills but valuable industry connections and professional credits.

Several participants have already secured paid work in the industry following their Film Accelerator experience, demonstrating the program’s effectiveness in building Aberdeen’s creative workforce. The collaborative nature of the program created lasting creative partnerships that continue to generate new projects in the region.

“Shoulder Deep” stands as testament to what Aberdeen’s creative community can achieve when given the opportunity to develop their talents through hands-on production experience.
